Pain Free …

A book I have had on my shelf for many years since a client gave it to me. I had done nothing more than browse through the pages, looking at occasional pictures of people in various positions, doing exercises developed by Pete Egoscue, an Anatomical Functionalist.

To be pain free…this is what we all want isn’t it? I am a massage therapist, and speaking to other therapists, this is again what we want for our clients, whether we use yoga, Pilates, osteopathy, acupuncture, massage or nutrition.

A few months ago I was in constant pain, unable to find relief in sitting, standing or lying down. I went to the GP and was given strong pain-killers - which if any of you know me is something I have always tried to avoid. I even had medication at night to help with sleeping, as I was unable to continue to work effectively without it. However, even with the medication, I could still feel this awful neurological pain down my left side, the outside of my left ankle had a constant ache and I was taking medication every four hours without a break.

I contacted a lady I have know about for some time, Karen Harris, who is a Posture Alignment Specialist, and fully qualified as a practitioner in the Egoscue Method. She was my saviour!

Five months on and my appointment arrived for an MRI, this highlighted a left S1 nerve root compression due to disc protrusion. I was offered surgery or nerve root injection. I am keen to avoid both, so I have chosen to continue with my alignment exercises, which are ‘tweaked’ regularly as my posture changes.

I now have no pain, at all! Hip hip hooray! I no longer wear orthotics in my shoes and as long as I continue to support my body with these exercises that help counteract my working positions I am Pain Free. I have now looked more closely to the book I was given all those years ago and continue to refer clients to Karen.
